Karl Lagerfeld, the German-born designer who later became Chanel's longtime creative director, launched his first fragrance, Lagerfeld Classic, in 1978 — a masculine scent of bergamot, lavender, and nutmeg that marked his debut in perfumery. Over his career, Lagerfeld released more than 40 fragrances, including the hugely popular 1990s women's scent Sun, Moon, Stars. His fragrance line continues today in collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger's parent company.
