Lacoste was founded in 1933 by French tennis champion René Lacoste and entrepreneur André Gillier, built around the revolutionary piqué-cotton polo shirt and the crocodile emblem that earned Lacoste his "Crocodile" nickname on court. Lacoste's first fragrance, launched in 1968 in collaboration with perfumer Jean Patou, bottled the sporty-chic identity of the brand, and the house has since built a large men's and women's fragrance catalog spanning L.12.12, Essential, and Eau de Lacoste.
