Jean Paul Gaultier launched his own fashion label in 1976, becoming known for irreverent, boundary-pushing designs like the reinvented sailor suit and the female corset. He entered fragrance in 1993 with Classique, a corset-shaped bottle housing notes of vanilla, orange blossom, and rose, created by perfumer Jacques Cavallier. Its masculine counterpart, Le Male, followed in 1995 — created by Francis Kurkdjian and packaged in a sailor-torso bottle inspired by the film Querelle — and remains one of the best-selling men's fragrances of all time. Gaultier's fragrances have been produced by Puig since 2016.
